Wi-Fi has become one of the most essential functions of our day-to-day lives, and RV owners are not excluded from this necessity. Wi-Fi is needed for communication, directions, mobile working, and so much more.
The problem, as many RV owners are aware, is getting Wi-Fi in an RV is often unreliable at best. An RV driver cannot always rely on local networks when they are constantly on the move during their drive.
Our DFW customers always ask us for tips on how to improve their Wi-Fi reception, so we wanted to take the time to share some knowledge on Wi-Fi in your RV.
What are my Wi-Fi options?
There are three main options for Wi-Fi for RV users:
- Public Wi-Fi Networks
- Cellular Network Hotspots
- Satellite Connection
Public Wi-Fi networks are readily available in RV parks, as well as locations such as McDonalds, Starbucks, and rest stops. These connections are reliable, cheap, and usually fast; however, you will have to hunt for these Wi-Fi connections, and they are not mobile.
Cellular Network Hotspots is probably the easiest and most accessible option for Wi-Fi while being mobile. Unlike public Wi-Fi, you will not need to hunt for a signal, since it is generated from your phone, and it is extremely fast, as it is your personal network; however, this is easily one of the most expensive options you can use, and cell phone companies usually put a cap on data usage.
Satellite Connections, like cellular hotspots, are completely mobile; however the connection tends to be slow and unreliable, which makes the use of satellite Internet fall from the graces of many RV users.
How can I make my Wi-Fi more Reliable?
Using cellular hotspots remains the most popular form of Wi-Fi for RV users and for good reason, as it is the most reliable source while on the move; however, there is a particular installation you can put on your RV to improve your reliability for public Wi-Fi.
We recommend our DFW customers look into buying a Wi-Fi antenna booster to increase the reliability of your connection. While there are many boosters you can use on your laptop, installing a Wi-Fi antenna booster on the roof of your coach will give you the strongest Wi-Fi range.
Also, installing a Wi-Fi antenna booster will allow you to reach Wi-Fi signals from a further distance. While the internet will still not be available when you are driving, the booster will allow your RV to reach several signals without having to be right next to a source.
Unfortunately, Wi-Fi for RV owners will always have to do a little more work for Wi-Fi compared to normal home internet; however, installing an antenna booster will help you find the strongest, fastest, and more reliable source.
