Tire blowout is one of the most frequent repairs we perform at Coach Specialists of Texas, an RV repair shop in Dallas/Fort Worth. When a motorhome has a tire blowout, it can be expensive to fix or replace, costing you anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000. And RV insurance typically doesn’t cover tire blowout repairs or replacements—only any damage resulting from the blowout. At Coach, we understand that not everyone has the time or the money to deal with RV tire problems, so we want to give you the advice you need for damage prevention. A little bit of TLC goes a long way when it comes to your tires, so here are some things you can do to maximize their lifespan:
Keep your motorhome tires inflated.
This is absolutely essential for the good health of your tires. Think about it: your tires are the only parts of your RV to make contact with the road. Your motorhome relies on (because it rides on) the air that is in your tires. That’s why it’s so important to take of them properly. Check your tire pressure and inflate your tires to the proper PSI (per square inch) every time you are about to take your motorhome on a long trip and every time you get gas. It’s best to do so when the tires are cold, so give them a rest before you check them. If you keep them inflated, they’ll wear more evenly, you’ll get better handling, and you’ll get better gas mileage. Plus, a properly-inflated tire has less contact with the road than an under-inflated one, allowing for less heat build-up and less risk of tire damage.
Regularly check for punctures in your tires.
While you’re checking your tires for proper PSI, it’s a good idea to inspect them for punctures, as well. Many times, tires will have nails embedded in them and the owners won’t even realize it until the tire is blown. Sometimes, punctured tires can be repaired by patching or plugging, so it’s smart to have any punctures addressed immediately.
Have your RV tires rotated often.
A good rule of thumb is to have your tires rotated every other time you get your oil changed. Rotating your tires balances out where their surface makes contact with the road, allowing for more even wear and a longer life.
