Most Common Summer Breakdowns for Dallas Fort Worth RV Owners

Now that we’re in the middle of another beautiful summer in the Dallas Fort Worth area, many DFW RV users are gearing up for their vacation plans. Preparing for a trip includes cleaning your RV, buying emergency equipment, and planning out specific routes; however, during all this preparation, RV drivers tend to forget what could happen during the drive. Breakdowns are an unfortunate circumstance for many RV drivers, and it’s the last thing a motorhome owner wants to experience.  We’ve been getting a lot of calls relating to breakdowns from our DFW customers, so we wanted to take the time and list the three most common breakdowns RV drivers experience during their summer vacations.

RV Tire Blowouts

Tire blowouts are the most frequent breakdown occurring to our DFW drives. With all the wear and tear that tires experience, it’s understandable that they would occasionally blow out—especially if they have not been properly cared for.  To repair or replace motorhome tires, it can cost you anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000.  Unfortunately, RV insurance typically doesn’t cover this—only the resulting damage.  The best thing you can do to prevent a tire blowout is to give your tires some extra TLC—after all, they are the only parts of your vehicle that actually make contact with the road.  Inspect your tires before any long trip and every time you get gas.  This includes looking for proper tire pressure, even wear, and any punctures. While this may seem like an annoying task, performing these routine check-ins on your tires will save you so much money on repairs, and can prevent a tire blowout happening during your vacation. Make sure to test your tires before any long trip, and after any long layoff.

RV Roof Repair and Replacement.

Another common type of motorhome damage we see in the summer is roof damage.  In the summer, many tree branches are heavy with leaves and they can easily damage a roof as you are making your way down the road.  When not being damaged by trees, RV roofs frequently take damage from outdoor signage, hail storms, and even owner neglect.  To replace an RV roof, it can cost upwards of $5,000 and RV insurance will only cover this if the damage is not due to owner neglect. Now, there are a variety of threats to your RV’s roof, and therefore there are a variety of upkeeps you must perform in order to keep your RV out of the repair shop and on the road. Owner neglect, as mentioned previously, is a big catalyst for roof damage, so it’s important to clean and maintain your roof regularly in order to avoid preventable water leaks. Clean the leaves off of your RV roof as frequently as you can. If you notice any sort of leaks, take your RV in to be repaired immediately. You should bring your RV in for an inspection ASAP after any hail storm, as well.

RV Exterior Damage from Scraping Objects.

It’s common during this time of year for motorhomes to suffer side damage from tree branches, bridges, signage, and more.  The cost for side damage repair starts at $500 and should be covered by your RV insurance, depending on your coverage.  The best way to avoid this kind of damage is to be conscious of the size of your RV and to slow down upon encountering any possibly damaging obstacles.
