Around this time of year, we tend to see a great deal of RV roof damage at Coach Specialists of Texas. Most often, RV roof damage is caused by the many thunderstorms that come rolling through this part of the country, but other times it is caused by scraping overhead objects, like tree branches and signage. We’ve also seen roof damage that was the result of owner neglect (many motorhome owners don’t realize how much maintenance their roofs require).
If any of these problems have happened to you, you’re probably worrying about a number of things, including the cost of repairs, whether your auto insurance will cover it, how long you might have to be without your motorhome, and more. One of the most common questions we hear from our customers is whether their roofs can be repaired or if they must be completely replaced. If this is a concern for you, as well, here is what you need to know about RV roof repair vs. replacement:
The extent of damage is an important factor.
Depending on the amount of damage your motorhome roof has experienced, it might only need a few simple repairs. For instance, a minor roof leak might be easily repaired with debris removal, surface cleaning, and re-sealing. A repair like this would cost very little compared to a full roof replacement. However, if your damage is more extensive, it is often a better choice to replace your roof. The reason for this is because the overall condition of your roof becomes compromised when it endures any kind of damage. An RV repair shop might be able to repair the problem areas, but the quality and longevity of your repair will be reduced. With a roof replacement, your motorhome will enjoy many more years of protection.
Consider the long-term costs.
While a roof repair might cost you less up front, it will likely cost you more in the long run if you end up having to repair it again and again (or have it replaced later). And some repairs can be just as intensive and costly as simply having the roof replaced. Also, you run the risk of other major problems, like water damage and mold, when you only have your roof repaired instead of replaced. Again, this is due to the compromised nature of your roof after it has been damaged. Water damage restoration and mold removal can add much more to your overall costs.
